When it comes to selling beats online, the first and most important element is without doubt the product itself i.e the beat/instrumental. Prior to any sort of marketing, It is crucial at first to have a catalogue of beats which resonate with listeners and are of high enough quality to where artists are interested in purchasing. With this in mind it should be noted that the music itself should always be prioritised first to ensure that the products you are putting out into the market are the best they can be.
Here are three tips for the producers who are still working on their craft and do not yet feel like their beats are at a high enough standard to be put out on the market.1. Educate yourself
Everyday is an opportunity to learn something new, so use your time wisely. Rather than binge watching your favourite Netflix series for the third time this week, put your time towards bettering your music career. There are thousands of videos and tutorials on beat-making spread throughout social media platforms such as YouTube and Instagram, where you learn from some of the best producers in the music industry and study their creative process.
Here are some channels on YouTube who create tutorials which I personally found the most useful when I first started making beats.
- Internet Money
- Producergrind 2.0
- Genius
- Holy
- LLB
- Ocean
- Kyle Beats
2. Practice
It doesn't matter how many videos or tutorials you consume, if you do not apply the knowledge you are learning by actually focusing on the practical side of making beats, you will never improve. Every day, set some time aside where you turn off all distractions e.g. social media, TV and just completely submerse yourself in the music. Spend as much time as you can making beats and you will without doubt see results. Don't be discouraged at first if the beats you are making are not quite what you know they could be. You aren't going to become a billboard producer overnight. Practice makes perfect, and experience is the best teacher.3. Patience
When first starting out it is so important to be patient and I cannot stress this enough. I know how it feels when you are putting countless hours into trying to get better and you feel like you're going nowhere. Patience was something which I struggled with personally when I first started making beats. Being young and naive, I seen all these top tier producers making 6/7 figures per year from selling beats online and thought "This looks easy". Straight away I set up my own beat store and started uploading my - which I was unaware of at the time - foolishly below average beats. I made zero sales. Let me repeat. ZERO SALES.
At the time I didn't understand why, but looking back I can now see that the difference in sales between me and those at the top was that their beats were astronomically superior. Fast forward to the present day and I have been making beats for nearly 2 years now and only recently got them to a stage where I was happy with how they sounded and was comfortable sharing them with others. Be patient and trust the process.
Self awareness ties in with this and is also a key aspect to progress with regards to selling beats online. Ask yourself, if I was an artist, would I purchase this beat? If not, keep working everyday until you get to this stage. If yes, great! You can now look into putting your beats in front of an audience.
Thanks,
Marc
